തിരുവനന്തപുരം: കേരളത്തിലെ എൻജിനിയറിങ് കോഴ്സുകളിലേക്കുള്ള പ്രവേശനത്തിനായി സംസ്ഥാന സർക്കാർ നടത്തുന്ന കീം പ്രവേശന പരീക്ഷയിൽ അടുത്ത അധ്യയന വർഷം മുതൽ സുപ്രധാന മാറ്റങ്ങൾ നടപ്പാക്കാനൊരുങ്ങി സംസ്ഥാന സർക്കാർ. എൻജിനിയറിങ് കോഴ്സുകളിലേക്കുള്ള കുട്ടികളുടെ ഒഴുക്ക് കുറയുകയും വിവിധ എൻജിനിയറിങ് കോളജുകൾ അടച്ചുപൂട്ടൽ ഭീഷണി നേരിടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ പ്രവേശന പരീക്ഷയുടെ ഘടനയിൽ മാറ്റം വേണമെന്ന ആവശ്യം ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ മേഖലയിൽ നിന്ന് പരക്കെ ഉയർന്നിരുന്നു.തമിഴ്നാടിന് സമാനമായി പരീക്ഷ ഒഴിവാക്കണമെന്ന ആവശ്യമാണ് എൻജിനിയറിങ് കോളജ് മാനേജ് മെൻ്റുകൾ ഉയർത്തുന്നത്. ഴിഞ്ഞദിവസം എൻജിനീയറിങ് കോളജ് പ്രതിനിധികളും ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസമേഖലയിലെ പ്രമുഖരും പങ്കെടുത്ത പ്രാരംഭ ചർച്ചയിലും കീം നിർത്തലാക്കണമെന്ന ആവശ്യമുയർന്നിരുന്നു. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ് കാതലായ മാറ്റത്തിൻ്റെ സാധ്യതകൾ പരിശോധിക്കാൻ സർക്കാർ തീരമാനിച്ചത്. പരീക്ഷയിൽ എന്തൊക്കെ മാറ്റം വരുത്തണമെന്നതുൾപ്പെടെ തുടർ ചർച്ചകൾക്കായി ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ കൗൺസിൽ വൈസ് ചെയർമാൻ ഡോ. അച്യുത് ശങ്കറിനെ സർക്കാർ ചുമതലപ്പെടുത്തി. ബദൽമാർഗം പഠിക്കാൻ കമ്മിഷനെ നിയോഗിക്കാനാണ് ആലോചന.ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ രംഗത്തു പൊളിച്ചെഴുത്ത് കൊണ്ടുവരുമെന്ന ബജറ്റ് പ്രഖ്യാപനത്തിനു പിന്നാലെയാണ് കേരളത്തിലേക്കു കൂടുതൽ വിദ്യാർഥികളെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്ന ചർച്ചകളിലേക്കു കടന്നത്. അടുത്ത അധ്യയന വർഷത്തിനു മുൻപു തന്നെ മാറ്റം യാഥാർഥ്യമാക്കണമെന്ന നിർദേശമാണ് മന്ത്രി റോജി എം ജോൺ നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. കേരളത്തിൽനിന്ന് 20-25 % വിദ്യാർഥികൾ എൻജിനീയറിങ് പഠനത്തിനു മറ്റു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലേക്കു പോകുന്നുണ്ടെന്നാണു കണക്കുകൾ പറുന്നത്. പ്രവേശന പരീക്ഷ ഒഴിവാക്കിയാൽ ഈ വിദ്യാർഥികളും കേരളത്തിലെ കോളജുകളിൽ തന്നെ പ്രവേശനം നേടും. നിലവിൽ സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് ഓരോ അധ്യയന വർഷവും ഇരുപതിനായിരത്തിലധികം സീറ്റുകൾ ഒഴിഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന സ്ഥിതിയാണ്. 2016 മുതലുള്ള കണക്കെടുത്താൽ ഏകദേശം ഇരുപതോളം എൻജിനിയറിങ് കോളജുകൾ പൂട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു. പ്രവേശന പരീക്ഷയിൽ മാറ്റം വരുത്തിയാൽ സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് എൻജിനിയറിങ് കോളജുകൾ നേരിടുന്ന പ്രതിസന്ധിക്കും വിദ്യാർഥികൾ മറ്റു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളെ ആശ്രയിക്കുന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിനും മാറ്റം വരുമെന്നാണ് വിലയിരുത്തൽ.
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government is preparing to implement major changes to the KEAM entrance examination—conducted by the state government for admission to engineering courses in Kerala—starting from the next academic year. In light of the declining student enrollment in engineering courses and several engineering colleges facing the threat of closure, demands for a structural change in the entrance examination have been widely raised from within the higher education sector.
Engineering college managements are demanding that the exam be scrapped entirely, similar to the system followed in Tamil Nadu. The demand to abolish KEAM was also raised during a recent preliminary discussion attended by engineering college representatives and prominent figures in the higher education sector. Against this backdrop, the government has decided to explore the possibilities of bringing about a fundamental change. The government has assigned Dr. Achuthsankar, Vice Chairman of the Higher Education Council, to lead further discussions on what changes should be made to the exam. There are also plans to appoint a commission to study alternative options.
Discussions on attracting more students to Kerala began following the budget announcement to revamp the higher education sector. Minister Roji M. John has directed that the changes be implemented before the next academic year. Statistics show that 20–25% of students from Kerala move to other states for engineering studies. If the entrance exam is abolished, these students are expected to secure admissions in colleges within Kerala itself. Currently, more than 20,000 seats remain vacant in the state every academic year. Looking at data since 2016, around 20 engineering colleges have closed down. The assessment is that changing the entrance exam will resolve the crisis faced by engineering colleges in the state and reduce the trend of students relying on other states.
