The Public Education Department in Kerala is set to make significant changes to the structure of examination question papers, starting with this year’s Onam exams. The question papers for students from classes 1 to 10 will undergo a complete overhaul as part of the Comprehensive Quality Improvement project.

The new format will place a greater emphasis on analytical questions. For classes 1 and 2, there will be a separate question paper for Mathematics. Classes 3 to 10 will now include objective-type questions, which will constitute 20% of the paper for LP and UP sections and 10% for the high school level.

More weight will be given to seven key cognitive processes: conceptual clarity, application skills, computational thinking, attitude, and analytical, critical, and creative values. The question papers will be designed with a three-tier difficulty level: 30% of the questions will be simple, designed to be answered by all students based on fundamental knowledge; 50% will be of an average difficulty; and 20% will be challenging questions that test a deeper understanding.

The Public Education Department hopes that these changes will enable a comprehensive educational advancement for students.
